Josip Broz - Tito, 1970

Description:

Josip Broz - Tito, (7. May 1892, Kumrovec, Avstro-Ogrska, † 4. May 1980, Ljubljana, Jugoslavija) was the leader of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1943 until his death in 1980.

During World War II, Josip Broz organized the anti-fascist resistance movement known as the Yugoslav Partisans. Tito was his secret partisan name.

Later he was a founding member of Cominform, but resisted Soviet influence (Titoism), and became one of the founders and promoters of the Non-Aligned Movement.

He supported the creation of a Yugoslav nationality and identity as a Pan-Slavic replacement of the existing nationalities in Yugoslavia, and thus considered himself a Yugoslav. He was an ethnic Croat of mixed Croatian-Slovene ancestry, with his father a Croat and his mother Slovene.

People like Tito or not. Some don’t. People like the 20th century or not. Some don’t. But they belong together, this man and this century.
(Fitzroy McLean)
